Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do custom work for personal use?

No, I currently only do commercial work for businesses as the effort, time, and budget required to complete illustrations means my custom work is not practical for personal use projects.

How much do you charge?

Because each project is unique, pricing will vary depending on the scope.

Custom illustrations also need to factor in: the complexity, quantity, time constraints (e.g. if it is a ‘rush’ job) and usage (where the illustration is used/printed, the geographical area in which it will be used, exclusivity, how long it will be used for).

I do however have a price guide which provides ballpark pricing to get you started. Please contact me to discuss your project details.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, a 50% deposit is required before work commences. Any job value under $500 is to be paid in full upfront. Payment via direct deposit is preferred, but I also accept credit card payments via Stripe (with a small processing fee added).

What is licensing?

Licensing is essentially an agreement that allows clients to use artwork for their required commercial purposes without paying for a copyright transfer (which would be a significant cost increase). Think of it like ‘renting’. You don’t own it but can use it for a specific time and purpose. Below is a basic breakdown of standard licensing terms.

Non-exclusive:

The illustrator can license the artwork to more than one client and also use it themselves however they wish (for example, make art prints, sell as digital downloads, make available for sale on POD sites such as Spoonflower etc). Copyright ownership remains with the illustrator.

Industry Exclusive:

Artwork is exclusive for a specific term and industry/category (e.g. greeting cards, home decor etc) but can also be licensed to other brands in non-competing/different industries (e.g. baby clothes etc). Copyright ownership remains with the illustrator at all times.

Fully Exclusive:

Artwork is exclusive to one brand only, meaning it will not not be licensed to anyone else during the term. If the brand decides not to re-license at the end of the term, then the artwork is available to license with another brand. Copyright ownership remains with the illustrator at all times.

What rights do you grant for custom illustration projects?

Projects that involve entirely new illustrations are generally provided with fully exclusive rights (to you and no one else) for a set term (e.g. 1 year, 2 years).

How long does it take to complete a project?

Custom projects take a minimum of 3 weeks from commencement to completion or even longer depending on the scope. Scheduling of projects is handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

How does the process work?

  • After your initial enquiry, I will ask further questions and collect a detailed brief to learn more about your business and the project. Understanding your requirements, budget and timeline will help me determine if I am a match for your project.

  • If we’re a good fit, then I’ll put together a custom quote. Once approved, I’ll then send through an agreement and invoice for the initial 50% deposit. Once the deposit is paid and the agreement signed, you’re all booked in!

  • I’ll then move onto rough sketches, compositions and colour palettes to get your initial feedback (it’s best to make major changes in this early stage). Once they are approved, I’ll start producing the final art for your sign off.

  • Final files are released to you once the remaining 50% has been paid.

  • Grab my price guide to see what packages I offer, then get in touch. We’ll then arrange a discovery call to chat about your specific needs, after which I’ll send over a custom proposal.

  • If approved, you’ll need to sign my agreement and pay 50% deposit to book your spot. Before I start designing, I’ll send you a brand questionnaire to learn more about your audience and goals. Next, I’ll translate this information into a creative direction proposal including 2-3 moodboard style directions for you to choose from.

  • Once you’ve selected a direction, I’ll start exploring and developing ideas before eventually narrowing down to the most impactful solution for your brand.

  • Finally, I will present you a fully developed brand identity including colour palettes, font suggestions and visual mockups to help you envision your brand in real life. We’ll continue working together to refine the design to make sure we have the right look.

  • Once everything is approved, I’ll send over a final invoice. After payment, I’ll send all of the final files via Google Drive.
